Here I have collected videos representing several distinct remix styles, covering a wide variety of social, cultural and political topics. I was asked to put together a new show for 2010 highlighting some of the best remixes of the last two years. I curated the political remix portion of the DIY 24/7 Video show at USC in the Spring of 2008. It is a way to communicate using that audio-visual language in poetic, humorous, poignant and entertaining ways. ![]() The remix video process provides creators a powerful way of talking back to this mass media machine. Today a small number of large corporations own, control and produce most of our popular culture. However despite the fact that they should be protected under fair use many critical remixes are especially vulnerable to DMCA takedowns and automatied content ID matching systems. All political remix videos are made without the permission of the copyright holder and rely on the fair use doctrine. Increasingly we are becoming a global culture that communicates in an audio-visual language. The media tools and technology of the 21st century have made the power of critical remix available to anyone with access to the web, a computer and some extra time. The 1980s and 1990s brought video tapes and home VCRs allowing artists, activists and fan-vidders to make remixes via tape-to-tape editing. These early re-mixes were painstakingly done by hand, splicing strips of film and setting them to a new audio track. During World War Two, the Allies propaganda machine re-edited footage from Nazi rallies for newsreels to poke fun at the German Army making it seem less threatening. The tradition dates back to the 1920's when Russian re-editors (many of them women) would repurpose American Hollywood films to create different political narratives and class messages. The practice of remixing and re-framing moving images for political purposes has been around since the invention of film. It is a form of critical DIY media production which challenges power structures, deconstructs cultural norms and subverts dominant social narratives by transforming fragments of mainstream media and popular culture. Political Remix Video can empower people to assert their creative voice, tell alternative stories and critically engage with mass media systems. ![]() The following curator's statement was written by Jonathan McIntosh, who describes himself as "a pop culture hacker, video remix artist and fair use advocate." This is the second in an ongoing series of curated selections of DIY Video prepared in relation to the screening of DIY Video 2010 at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and organized by Mimi Ito, Steve Anderson, and the good folks at the Institute for Multimedia Literacy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Canvas was originally introduced as a more efficient alternative to wooden panels canvas painting is the precursor of canvas print.Read on to find out what distinguishes the two mediums. Canvas paintings are often confused with canvas prints – which is probably due to the similar names as much as the visual resemblance. In short, canvas paintings are the paintings you know from art galleries. What are canvas paintings and how are they different from canvas prints? The answer is actually pretty straightforward. The difference becomes apparent when you zoom in the page - the PNG image becomes pixelated as you zoom in because it contains information on where each pixel should be (and what color). What Are Canvas Paintings? by Gvido Grube 3 Minutes The difference is that the left one is a PNG, and the right one is an SVG image. You can find this example live on our GitHub repo as vector-versus-raster.html - it shows two seemingly identical images side by side, of a red star with a black drop shadow. To give you an idea of the difference between the two, let's look at an example. The SVG format allows us to create powerful vector graphics for use on the Web. Vector images are defined using algorithms - a vector image file contains shape and path definitions that the computer can use to work out what the image should look like when rendered on the screen.Popular web raster formats include Bitmap (. Raster images are defined using a grid of pixels - a raster image file contains information showing exactly where each pixel is to be placed, and exactly what color it should be.On the web, you'll work with two types of images - raster images, and vector images: Solve common problems in your JavaScript code.Express Tutorial Part 7: Deploying to production.Express Tutorial Part 6: Working with forms.Express Tutorial Part 5: Displaying library data.Express Tutorial Part 4: Routes and controllers.Express Tutorial Part 3: Using a Database (with Mongoose).Express Tutorial Part 2: Creating a skeleton website.Express Tutorial: The Local Library website.Setting up a Node development environment.Express web framework (Node.js/JavaScript).Express Web Framework (node.js/JavaScript).Django Tutorial Part 11: Deploying Django to production.Django Tutorial Part 10: Testing a Django web application.Django Tutorial Part 9: Working with forms.Django Tutorial Part 8: User authentication and permissions.Django Tutorial Part 7: Sessions framework.Django Tutorial Part 6: Generic list and detail views.Django Tutorial Part 5: Creating our home page.Django Tutorial Part 4: Django admin site.Django Tutorial Part 2: Creating a skeleton website.Django Tutorial: The Local Library website.Setting up a Django development environment.Server-side website programming first steps.Setting up your own test automation environment.Building Angular applications and further resources.Advanced Svelte: Reactivity, lifecycle, accessibility.Dynamic behavior in Svelte: working with variables and props.Vue conditional rendering: editing existing todos.Adding a new todo form: Vue events, methods, and models.Ember Interactivity: Footer functionality, conditional rendering.Ember interactivity: Events, classes and state.Ember app structure and componentization.React interactivity: Editing, filtering, conditional rendering.Understanding client-side web development tools.MathML - Writing mathematics with MathML.Performance - Making websites fast and responsive.CSS and JavaScript accessibility best practices.Accessibility - Make the web usable by everyone.CSS property compatibility table for form controls.Adding features to our bouncing balls demo.Making decisions in your code - conditionals.Basic math in JavaScript - numbers and operators.Storing the information you need - Variables. What went wrong? The only way to escape is to give the message scroll to David, and ask him to deliver it while the Ranger holds the ghosts at bay. The Gell-Mann ghosts (nasty creatures) surround them. The scene fades through a plasma wall, into "The Hall of Destiny" where we are introduced to the main character in the story – David (voiced by Chris Pine), a young Photon who should have begun his travel to the surface a million years ago. He adds that the only being who does not like the Core is a creature called the "Void" (voiced by Mark Hamill) who is an ancient, malevolent, being who existed before the Big Bang, and who sits at the edge of the Solar System, scheming to stop the Core. He explains that the "man in the sun is called the Core (voiced by William Shatner)" and spins a story how he is good and that his children " photons" are sent out to chase away the darkness, and bring life, warmth, and knowledge to Earth. They also move glacially, we're a full year into S2 and there's a tiny bit of support for one service. Sonos made a decision a long time ago to focus on CD quality and delivering the same stream to every device. The point is fine, buying or streaming high res is easier than ever and storage and bandwidth are more available than ever and it's good to get stuff at the quality it's mastered at but not because it sounds better. I like Audioholics and consider them to be a no BS source but that article you linked is 6 years old and everyone interested in it has heard vastly more high res audio in the time since and there's been more research. Qobuz is, however, the first service to make 24-bit hi-res streaming available on Sonos products. High resolution isn't bad (except MQA but that's a whole other argument) but in my opinion it shouldn't be a dealbreaker feature. Listen to the same mix at 192/48 vs 16/44 and you won't, at least not reliably. Toe in your speakers a bit, do some mild EQ or move your chair a couple feet and you'll hear a difference. Today, that finally changes: All Sonos users who are currently running the S2 version of the company’s software will be able to stream hi-res music from Qobuz, with a valid subscription. The fact that we're 10+ years into high resolution being widely available and directly comparable to the exact same release at other bit rates (so not specific SACD mixes) and there's still argument shows how, even if there is a difference, it's tiny. For years, Sonos steadfastly refused to support hi-res music formats on its massively popular line of wireless speakers. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Voto’s debut collection features a tight edit of 14 pieces (11 garments and three accessories) rendered in sumptuous upcycled fabrics from fashion capitals around the Statikleo statik logo shirt and by the same token and world.
